YLD Webinar: Path to Partnership

On September 8, 2025, the Young Lawyer Division launched their inaugural webinar series with: Path to Partnership.

The distinguished panelists listed below shared their personal journeys to partnership, membership, and shareholder roles within their respective firms. Participants gained candid insights into the challenges and milestones along the path to partnership; strategic career planning tips tailored to early-career associates; and practical advice for navigating firm culture, building a book of business, and positioning oneself for advancement.

Moderator:

Kandis Kovalsky, Kang Haggerty

Kandis is a trial lawyer in Philadelphia. Her practice focuses on a broad range of high stakes business-related civil litigation in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York state and federal courts and arbitral tribunals, and representing relators in high stakes qui tam actions filed under the federal and state False Claims Acts. In her commercial litigation practice, Kandis routinely handles expedited litigation matters, including temporary restraining orders and injunctions in federal court relating to theft of trade secrets and enforcing noncompete and non-solicitation provisions. Kandis' whistleblower practice focuses on healthcare fraud on government healthcare payors such as Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE.

Before she attended law school, Kandis was a competitive figure skater for fifteen years. While at the University of Delaware, Kandis was an eight-time Intercollegiate National medalist.

Kandis resides in Philadelphia with her beloved cat, Popple. In her spare time, Kandis enjoys live music, traveling abroad, Peloton workouts, reading, and trying new restaurants in Philadelphia.

Kathryn (Katie) Weber - Panelist; Mansour Gavin

Kathryn Weber focuses her practice on real estate and land use issues, handling both transactions and litigation in this field. Her experience extends to commercial and residential leasing, acquisitions and sales, landlord-tenant disputes, entitlements, development projects, and eminent domain litigation.

Kathryn is also well-versed in municipal law and currently serves as an Assistant Law Director for Mayfield Village. She has provided legal guidance to numerous municipalities on a variety of matters including zoning code revisions, development agreements, moratoriums, and legislation. Having experience on both sides of development projects provides her with a unique perspective and the ability to overcome challenges.

Kathryn resides in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood of Cleveland, where she enjoys exploring local bars and restaurants and spending time with her friends and family.

Brett Thomas - Panelist; CohenMalad

Brett B. Thomas, Partner, focuses his work in the firm’s Business & Real Estate practice group. His practice includes representing small and large businesses across the state of Indiana in a variety of disputes involving vendors, contractors, landlords, employees and more.

Prior to joining CohenMalad, LLP, Brett gained a wealth of trial experience representing indigent citizens of Marion County as a Public Defender. Brett’s experience has given him command of courtroom procedure and the litigation process. Additionally, Brett has developed the ability to view problems from multiple viewpoints and find creative solutions.

Outside of his legal practice, Brett enjoys traveling, cooking, dining out and discovering new cuisines. He loves exploring new places and meeting new people but is happy to call Indianapolis home.

Aviv Asoulin - Panelist; EPGD Business Law

Aviv Asoulin is a Partner and Managing the Corporate Practice Group at EPGD Business Law. Aviv represents local and international businesses. His practice focuses on transactional matters, including but not limited to Commercial Law, Franchise Law, Employment Law, and Securities Law. Aviv was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel and is fluent in Hebrew. Coming from a family of small business owners, Aviv is passionate about helping entrepreneurs succeed.

Before law school, Aviv received a B.S. in Legal Studies and a B.S. in Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida. During his undergraduate studies, Aviv worked in a criminal law firm in Orlando, Florida.

On a personal note, Aviv enjoys spending time with his wife and family. When he’s not spending time with his loved ones, he is probably playing or watching basketball or soccer. He is a big fan of the Miami Heat and F.C. Barcelona.
